History

Known locally as Brady’s Castle, The Tower House sits on a medieval site dating back to the 12th Century, making it one of the oldest tower houses in Ireland today. The three story fortified building with its magnificent castle room boasts original Dundry Stone windows.

Prior to the 1970’s the first floor served as a grain store with a cow byre on the ground floor beneath. Ben & Tess Hennessy purchased the property in 1976 and the restoration began in 1983 under the expert guidance of Clive Nunn, the renowned Kilkenny furniture designer and cabinet maker. The pitch pine floor in the Castle Room was salvaged from the famous wooden bridge at Fiddown, Co.Waterford.

The birthplace of the 18th century philosopher George Berkeley, Thomastown is known for its thriving arts and crafts community and its colourful population of creative characters. The late John Martyn (1948-2009) made it his home here in his last years and the town has long been a mecca for musicians. The four times Oscar nominated Cartoon Saloon animation studios are based in Kilkenny.

The famous Mount Juliet estate lies on the edge of the town with its Michelin star Lady Helen restaurant and a Jack Nicklaus championship golf course which has played host to numerous major international tournaments.
